Only a Plaid Cymru government can be trusted to save and strengthen the NHS in Wales, the party’s Shadow Health Minister Elin Jones has said.
Outside Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli yesterday, Elin Jones said that a Plaid Cymru government will deliver hospital services as close to patients as possible.
This means creating a Community NHS to deliver primary care services as close to home as possible, providing consultant-led Accident and Emergency and Maternity services within one hour’s reach of rural and peripheral communities, and a network of specialist treatment centres serving the nation as a whole.
Elin Jones said that under Labour the NHS in Wales had been run down, with services such as the A&E department in Prince Philip Hospital being downgraded. She said that under the Tories, all services would be at risk of privatisation. Only Plaid Cymru will protect services.
Plaid Cymru Shadow Health Minister Elin Jones said:
“This election is seen by many as a referendum on the way our NHS is run. Under Labour it has been run down; under the Tories it could be sold off. Only Plaid Cymru will deliver high quality hospital services delivered as close to people as possible.
“Plaid Cymru will develop a strong network of hospital services throughout Wales, with community and life-saving services delivered as close to home as possible, and a network of specialist services serving the nation as a whole.
“After seventeen years of Labour rule, patients in Wales have to wait longer for services than elsewhere in the UK. Welsh patients and NHS staff deserve better. We deserve a comprehensive service that is planned and managed properly. Plaid Cymru is the change Wales needs.”
Plaid Cymru Llanelli candidate Helen Mary Jones said:
“The people of Llanelli know better than anyone how Labour has failed to protect hospital services. Despite our efforts to save A&E services at Prince Philip Hospital, those who signed petitions, wrote to the Health Minister or protested outside the Senedd, Labour let us down and downgraded our service.
“It’s time for a party with clear plans to save and strengthen the NHS. Plaid Cymru will increase the number of doctors and nurses in NHS, reduce waiting times by speeding up test and discharge times, and will protect hospital services that are close to people.
“Only Plaid Cymru can be trusted to protect hospital services.”
