Plaid Cymru’s MPs will be voting against the British Government’s EU Withdrawal Bill in the House of Commons tonight as their Brexit spokesperson, Hywel Williams calls the Bill “an affront to democracy”.

The EU (Withdrawal) Bill gives British Government Ministers powers to act without the need for Parliamentary approval, including powers to amend existing Welsh legislation. It will also ensure that any powers currently held at EU level being repatriated, even in devolved areas of policy, will be held in London.

Plaid Cymru’s Brexit spokesperson, Hywel Williams has accused the British Government of “driving a wrecking ball through two referendums” – in which the people of Wales voted to solidify Welsh sovereignty.

Mr Williams describes the Brexit Secretary’s accusations that those who oppose the Withdrawal Bill are disrespecting the EU referendum as “heinous hypocrisy”.

Commenting ahead of the debate, Plaid Cymru’s Brexit spokesperson, Hywel Williams said:

“The British Government is attempting to use the EU referendum result as a means of grabbing power for themselves and bypassing democracy. They are trying to give themselves the ability to act without the need for Parliamentary approval – including the ability to amend Welsh legislation that is the responsibility of our own Parliament in Wales, not Westminster.

The Bill is an affront to democracy. They are driving a wrecking ball through two referendums in which the people of Wales voted to solidify their country’s sovereignty and for the Brexit Secretary to suggest that we are disrespecting the EU referendum by attempting to protect democracy is nothing short of heinous hypocrisy.

“Both the Welsh Government and the Scottish Government share Plaid Cymru’s dismay at this Bill and both have indicated that they will not approve the Bill. The British Government must give us an assurance that they will honour the democratic principle that they should gain the consent of each UK country before they pass this Bill.

“Westminster is jumping onto devolved Welsh territory and Plaid Cymru will not stand by and allow them to do so.

“Plaid Cymru will be voting against this Bill tonight and we’ll be proposing a number of amendments at the next stage.”
