Plaid Cymru leader, Leanne Wood, has told the BBC’s Sunday Politics programme that the UK election on June 8th is about “defending Wales” from privatisation

The Plaid leader told the BBC that an increased mandate for the Tories in June could lead to the Welsh NHS being privatised.

Ms Wood also warned that the way in which the UK leaves the European Union could be damaging to Wales, which has a bigger trade in goods surplus than any other country in the UK.

Ms Wood said that tariffs being introduced on Welsh exports will have a real impact on jobs and wages in Wales and she claimed that anything that puts Welsh jobs at risk is unacceptable to Plaid Cymru.

Speaking on the BBC’s Sunday Politics programme, Plaid Cymru leader, Leanne Wood, said:

“This election is all about defending Wales, protecting Welsh people from privatisation, further cuts and from a Tory power grab.

“The Tories have attacked the Welsh NHS quite viciously. If they increase their mandate then I wouldn’t put it past them to try to take powers back from Wales over the NHS, and then of course we risk our NHS being privatised.

“The way in which we leave the European Union could be damaging to Wales. If, for example, there are tariffs introduced on Welsh exports then that will have a real impact in terms of Welsh jobs. Anything that puts Welsh jobs at risk is unacceptable to Plaid Cymru and we will do all we can to protect those jobs.

“Plaid Cymru is about defending Wales. There are so many risks facing our people from a jobs perspective, from a privatisation perspective, from a cuts perspective and from a Tory power grab.

“Only Plaid Cymru can defend Wales against the Tories.”
