Stop Port Talbot Prison: Letters to MPs and AMs

The UK and Welsh Governments are working together to make Wales one of the only countries in the world to be a mass importer of prisoners. The proposal to build yet another super prison in Wales – this time in Port Talbot – is unwelcome, unwanted and completely unnecessary. Plaid Cymru has tabled matching statements in the National Assembly for Wales and the Westminster Parliament. AMs and MPs are able to sign these statements - called EDMs in Westminster and Statements of Opinion in the Welsh Assembly - in order to show that they are against the imposition of this super prison on Port Talbot.

Using the templates below, you can write to or email your MP and AM asking them to support our statements to stop Port Talbot prison.

Letter to MPs

Dear MP,

Stop Port Talbot Super Prison: Sign EDM 338

Earlier this year, the UK Government opened the biggest prison in Europe in North Wales. Now, the UK and Welsh governments are working together on plans to impose yet another mega prison on Wales that we do not need nor want – this time in Port Talbot.

If this prison goes ahead, Wales will have a surplus of almost 2,400 prison places which will be used to prop up the failing English prison system.

As your constituent, I would like you to tell the UK Government to stop plans to build this prison. We do not need this prison and we certainly will not stand by and have it imposed on us.

You can do this by supporting EDM 338 tabled by Liz Saville Roberts MP. This EDM raises the concerns of the people of Wales and the local community in Port Talbot, and calls on the UK Government to end its plans to build a new super prison in Wales.

You can also tweet your support for this campaign using the hashtag: #StopNPTPrison.

We cannot continue to let the UK Government completely disregard the concerns of our communities.

Yours sincerely,

Dear AM,

Stop Port Talbot Super Prison: Sign Statement of Opinion 0059

Earlier this year, the UK Government opened the biggest prison in Europe in North Wales. Now, the UK and Welsh governments are working together on plans to impose yet another mega prison on Wales that we do not need nor want – this time in Port Talbot.

If this prison goes ahead, Wales will have a surplus of almost 2,400 prison places which will be used to prop up the failing English prison system.

As your constituent, I would like you to tell the Welsh Government to put a halt to the plans to build this prison. We do not need this prison and we certainly will not stand by and have it imposed on us.

You can do this by supporting Statement of Opinion 0059 tabled by Bethan Jenkins AM. This Statement of Opinion raises the concerns of the people of Wales and the local community in Port Talbot, and calls on the Welsh Government to end its plans to support the building a new super prison in Wales.

We cannot continue to let the Welsh Government completely disregard the concerns of our communities at the whim of Westminster.

Yours sincerely,
