Plaid challenges Welsh MPs to back Single Market membership

Plaid Cymru has called on all Welsh MPs to support a cross-party amendment calling for continued membership of the Single Market and Customs Union.

A cross-party amendment, signed by MPs from the SNP, the Labour Party, the Green Party, the Liberal Democrats and every single MP from Plaid Cymru, has been selected by the Speaker of the House of Commons.

The amendment will cause embarrassment for the leader of the Labour Party and the leader of the Labour Party in the National Assembly who have both expressed opposition to calls for the UK to remain in the Single Market.

Some 200,000 jobs in Wales depend on trade with the Single Market and giving up our membership would put these jobs at risk. Plaid Cymru has consistently called for Wales to remain in the Single Market and the Customs Union after Brexit and all Plaid Cymru MPs will vote for the amendment tonight.

Plaid Cymru has challenged all Welsh MPs from all parties to put the Welsh national interest before their parties’, defy their leaders and support the amendment.

Commenting ahead of the vote, Plaid Cymru’s Brexit spokesperson, Hywel Williams, said:

“Unlike the UK, Wales is a net exporter of goods and some 200,000 jobs across Wales depend upon our trade with the Single Market.

“Leaving the Single Market would put the jobs and wages of every Welsh citizen at risk and there is a duty on every MP representing a constituency in Wales to vote to keep us in the Single Market and Customs Union.

“We have an opportunity tonight to protect the jobs and wages of our citizens and all Welsh MPs must defy their leadership and vote for the amendment.

“Labour and Tory MPs have a choice between voting for the Welsh national interest or obeying their orders from Corbyn, Carwyn Jones and Theresa May.

“Any Welsh MPs voting against this amendment will be voting against the interests of their constituents and compatriots and I urge every Welsh MP to put their internal divisions aside and support the amendment tonight.”
