Plaid Cymru's Jonathan Edwards MP has today warned people in Wales not to be drawn in by the prospect of a Welsh leader of the Labour Party, highlighting Owen Smith's record of repeatedly failing to stand up for Wales's national interests.

Jonathan Edwards's comments come as the MP for Pontypridd announced that he would enter the race to be the next Labour leader as the party is plunged deeper into civil war.

He added that Owen Smith's voting record showed that he was more interested in boosting his own career prospects in Westminster before what's best for the Welsh communities he was elected to represent.

Plaid Cymru MP for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr, Jonathan Edwards said:

"Those hoping that the prospect of a Welsh MP entering the race to be Labour leader is good news for our nation will be bitterly disappointed once they take a look at Owen Smith's voting record.

"From supporting the Tory austerity fiscal charter to refusing to give Wales control over vital areas such as energy and policing, the Labour MP for Pontypridd has repeatedly sat on his hands or voted against the national interest during crucial votes.

"Owen Smith's record of putting his Westminster career prospects before the interests of the Welsh communities he was elected to represent signals nothing short of betrayal.

"With this latest chapter in a long-running sorry saga plunging the party deeper into civil war, it is clear that Labour is simply not fit to govern.

"In stark contrast, Plaid Cymru is offering strong leadership and the reassurance people require during this period of political upheaval.

"While Labour politicians continue to fight among themselves, Plaid Cymru representatives will carry on doing what they have always done - fight tirelessly for our country and its communities."
